Perioperative Care Suite

Prophecy offers a suite of Perioperative Care assessments, helping healthcare organizations mitigate risk, which focus on the core job knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to provide safe and effective patient care in these settings:

  • Endoscopy/GI Lab
  • Operating Room RN
  • PACU RN
  • Pre-Operative RN
  • Surgical/Scrub Tech

Parallel Forms

The Perioperative assessments were developed using Prophecy’s rigorous validation process resulting in parallel forms (A and B versions) for each specialty.   Parallel forms, although alike in content breadth and difficulty level, house unique questions from one another. These allow Prophecy clients to offer pre-training / post-training assessments with unique question sets to further facilitate and customize remediation/education initiatives.

Endoscopy / GI Lab

The Endoscopy / GI Lab assessment is inclusive of determining knowledge of nursing process, equipment frequently used in the Endo / GI Lab, and knowledge of the EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy). In addition, the assessment measures knowledge sets specific to:

  • Cardiovascular
  • Endocrine
  • Gastrointestinal
  • GI Pharmacology

With 50 questions, this comprehensive exam covers a wide range of topics vital to successful nursing practice in any Endo/GI Lab.

This perioperative care nursing exam includes a Pharmacology component, focusing on medication administration and identification, therefore you will not need to administer a separate Pharmacology Exam.


Operating Room RN

The Operating Room RN assessment is designed for the OR RN working collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical technologist, and other nursing teams, caring for patients in both the inpatient and outpatient OR setting. It measures job knowledge for safe patient care, in the following areas:

  • comprehensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology
  • surgical scrub technique
  • circulating nurse responsibilities
  • proper patient positioning
  • safety measures for both patient and staff in the OR
  • nursing process in care plan management for surgical patients
  • pharmacology component
  • equipment common to the OR
  • ethical and legal issues related to OR nursing practice

This perioperative care nursing exam includes a Pharmacology component, focusing on medication administration and identification, therefore you will not need to administer a separate Pharmacology Exam.

PACU RN

The Post Anesthesia Care Unit assessment covers care of post surgical patients in both the inpatient and outpatient PACU setting. It measures job knowledge for safe patient care, in the following areas:

  • anesthesia
  • respiratory instability/pulmonary support
  • hemodynamic monitoring
  • anatomy & physiology
  • pharmacology, especially in anesthetics, reversals, and antibiotics,
  • pain management
  • ECG monitors, including dysrhythmia interpretation.

This perioperative care nursing exam includes a Pharmacology component, focusing on medication administration and identification, therefore you will not need to administer a separate Pharmacology Exam.

Pre-Operative RN

The Prophecy Prep Pre-Operative RN assessment covers care of pre surgical patients in both the inpatient and outpatient PACU setting. It measures job knowledge for safe patient care, in the following areas:

  • Clinical Practice
  • Communication and Patient Education
  • Medication Administration and Pain Management
  • Patient Safety and Management of Clinical Environment 
  • Professional Issues

This perioperative care nursing exam includes a Pharmacology component, focusing on medication administration and identification, therefore you will not need to administer a separate Pharmacology Exam.


Surgical Tech / Scrub Tech

Prophecy’s Surgical Technologist/Scrub Tech assessment contains all of the components that are unique to most surgical settings (acute care, ambulatory, surgical centers, outpatient care centers) and will determine clinical competency accordingly.

It measures job knowledge for safe patient care, including:


Preoperative care

  • Required patient charting
  • Commonly used medical abbreviations/terminology
  • Appropriate skin preparation
  • Surgical hand scrub, gloving, and gowning


Intraoperative care

  • Medications and their use as applied in specific surgical procedures
  • Fluid replacement commonly used in surgery
  • Supplies used in suturing and stapling
  • Infection control practices
  • Proper tissue handling
  • Recognizing signs of adverse side effects


Postoperative care

  • Preparing and labeling of tissue specimens obtained during surgery
  • Applying necessary equipment to patient as indicated before, during, and
    after surgery
  • Ethical and legal practices in providing care
  • Proper procedures for cleaning operating rooms, disposal of contaminated
    waste/sharps, preparing instruments for decontamination and sterilization
  • Assisting physician in surgical site/wound closure
  • Knowledge of all body systems as they relate to surgical procedures
  • Verifying, preparing, mixing, labeling, and calculating medications and solutions used at the sterile field
